Body moderately elongate, robust, body depth at dorsal fin origin 27-29% SL, compressed; head pointed, with nearly straight upper profile; eye moderate size (7.4-8.7% SL); front nostril tubular, near top lip; mouth moderately large, slightly oblique, lower jaw projecting; rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed, without accessory bone above it, lower rear corner of top jaw bone with prominent, bluntly pointed, ventral projection; rear edge of preopercle not serrated; operculum with 3 broad flat spines at rear; 17-18 gill rakers, including 5 rudiments; dorsal fin VIII (rarely IX), 12, rear part of spinous dorsal divided to its base, 3rd spine longest; anal fin III, 8.5, rear edge pointed; pectoral 14; tail base deep, strongly compressed; tail slightly forked; scales small, rough, 46-48 with pores on lateral line.
Head salmon, with a yellow stripe from tip of snout through eye to corner of operculum; iris orangish, crossed by the yellow stripe, a thin inner yellow ring; body with lower 2/3 salmon, upper 1/3 yellow or with dense yellow blotches, lower profile of belly and tail base yellow; dorsal, tail, anal and pelvic fins yellow; pectorals clear. Juvenile with salmon head and body, a yellow stripe from tip of snout, through eye to upper corner of opercle; upper half of body heavily spotted with yellow; tail fin yellow, with a large red-brown blotch in its center, that bordered at rear by white.
Reaches 13.5 cm.
Lives on reefs.
