Body elongate, compressed, oval; head pointed, short, compressed; eye large; mouth strongly oblique; rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed, without accessory bone above it; canine teeth at front of mouth; teeth on center and sides of roof of mouth; preopercle margin serrated above and below, 1- several longer spines at lower corner; 38-43 gill rakers; dorsal fin with X, 13-14, third spine longest, all spines with filaments, those of 3rd-5th spines long and filamentous, at least in adults; anal fin III, 8-9; pelvics inserted under base of pectoral; pelvics long, passing origin of anal fin, 24-38% of SL; pectorals 16-21; tail fin deeply forked, lobes with long filaments; scales small, rough, 44-53 on lateral line, 7-8 rows between 5th dorsal fin and lateral line; both jaws and most of snout and area between eyes scaleless.
Reddish pink head and upper body, lower body whitish; two oblique yellow stripes on cheek and opercle, 1 under eye, the other through the eye; dorsal fin pink in female, mauve in male; tail fin pink with yellow lobes in female, mauve lobes in male; anal yellow in male, mottled with blue and olive in female; pelvics pink in female, deep red in male.
Size: grows to 25 cm.
Inhabits deep reefs; often in large schools.
Depth: 20-610 m.
New Jersey to Brazil.
