Yellowedge grouper

Body robust, oval, compressed, deepest at origin of dorsal fin, depth < head length; rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed, without bony knob at lower rear corner; teeth depressible; sides of roof of mouth with teeth; front and rear nostrils ~equal in shape & size; operculum edge with 3 flat spines; preoperculum serrate, with larger serrate at angle that area coalesced into an angular serrated lobe in large fish; 23-25 gill rakers; dorsal fin XI, 13-15, spine III or IV longest but only slightly longer than X, membranes between front spines slightly indented, length of base of soft part not longer than that of spiny part; anal fin III, 9; pectoral fin symmetrically rounded, 18; origin of pelvic before origin of pectoral, about equal in length to pectoral; tail convex in small fish, straight to slightly concave in large fish; body scales rough on sides, ~65 on lateral line.

Adult: head and body yellowish-brown to grey-brown, whitish below; edges of dorsal, pectoral and sometimes anal and tail fins yellow; a prominent blue line from eye to corner of preopercle; adults can temporarily display the grid of white spots seen in juveniles. Juvenile: dark brown, a blue line from eye to edge of preopercle; a grid of pearl spots (7 columns of 4 spots each) on body; a shallow dark brown blotch on upper tail base that does not reach below the lateral line; dorsal fin with yellow edge; tail fin white to yellow, anal and pelvics blackish.

Reaches 115 cm, 20 kg.

Lives on reefs and digs burrows in sand/mud bottoms.

Depth range: 64-370 m.

N Carolina to Brazil.
