Diplectrum bivittatum (Valenciennes, 1828)

Dwarf sand perch

Body elongate, moderately compressed; eye large; rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed; teeth fixed, not depressible; angle of preopercle with a pointed bony spur supporting 1 cluster of radiating spines; dorsal fairly low, X spines, 11-13 rays; anal fin III, 6-8; pectoral 14-16; pelvics inserted under or a little before pectorals; tail fin moderately forked, top lobe with a filament; lateral line complete; scales moderately small, rough; snout and between eyes scaleless; 61-63 lateral scales; 8 rows of scales between eye and lower corner of preoperculum.

Pale brown; body with series of short, irregular double dark bars overlaying 2 dark stripes above midside; dark mark visible through upper corner of operculum; blue lines on cheek & under eye. Young with 2 broad dark stripes (1 from opercle to base of tail fin, the other above that), each ending in a dark blue- or white-edged spot.

Reaches 25 cm

Sand and mud bottoms, often near reefs.

Depth range: 2-140 m, usually 15-80 m.

Florida to Brazil.
