Blackwing searobin

Snout long, sloping; no spines at nostrils; no cirri over nostrils or eyes; mouth large, reaches to front of eye, opens slightly under snout, lower jaw not projecting; preopercular spine reaching past operculum; dorsal rays X, 12; anal rays 10; pectoral fin with lower rays longer than upper rays, the rear edge of the fin oblique as a result, 13-14 joined rays, fin reaching to end of base of anal fin, with 3 enlarged, free rays at bottom of fin; body scaled; membrane above opercular spine with scales; nape with scales.

Body uniform grey-brown; 1st dorsal fin sometimes with dark blotch that fades with age, without occelated outer spot; pectoral dark grey-brown, with distinct blue lower margin, inner face usually with dark spots or bars; anal fin clear; pelvics with black pepper dots; tail fin with 3 bars, outer part reddish.

Size: reaches 23 cm.

Habitat: mud-sand bottoms.

Depth: 2-212 m, usually 9-55 m.

N Carolina to Guyana.
