Bluespotted searobin

Head short deep, robust; no cirri over nostrils or eyes; snout short, mouth short, opens slightly under snout, lower jaw not projecting; dorsal rays X, 12; anal rays 10; pectoral fin with rounded rear edge, 13-14 joined rays, reaches past anal fin base, with 3 enlarged, free rays at bottom of fin, upper free ray short, not reaching end of pelvic fin; body scaled; membrane above opercular spine with scales; nape with scales.

Body greenish grey-brown, with darker, sometimes reddish eye-sized spots; underside of head red; membranes under throat white to red; pectoral fin with 4 rows of numerous bright blue &/or dark ocellated spots, lower edge dark (not blue), upper 3-4 rays barred; spot on spiny dorsal fin not ocellated; anal fin white or with black pepper dots at rear; tail fin with 2 broad dark bars; pelvics orangish near base.

Size: reaches 20 cm.

Habitat: mud-sand bottoms.

Depth: 9-262 m, usually 27-91 m.

N Carolina to Brazil.
