Bluewing searobin

Head short deep, robust; no cirri over nostrils or eyes; snout short; mouth large, reaches under front edge of eye, opens slightly under snout, lower jaw not projecting; dorsal rays X, 12; anal rays 10; pectoral fin with rounded rear edge, 13-14 joined rays, reaches ~1/2 way along anal fin base, with 3 enlarged, free rays at bottom of fin, upper free ray long, reaching end of pelvic fin; body scaled; membrane above opercular spine with scales; nape with scales.

Body greenish brown with small rounded red-brown spots on upper back; lower jaw and under head yellow; inside mouth orange; pectoral fin black  to dark green, sometimes with small dark oval spots above, lower edge bright blue; anal and pelvic fins pink; 2nd dorsal and tail fins with brown spots; juveniles with spot on spiny dorsal fin; often a spot on center of base of tail fin and on upper and lower margins behind that spot.

Size: reaches 20 cm.

Habitat: mud-sand bottoms.

Depth: 7-190 m, usually ~30 m.

The Gulf of Mexico to Argentina.
