Mexican searobin

Snout moderate; moderately steep; no spines around nostrils; no cirri over nostrils or eyes; mouth small, opens slightly under snout, lower jaw not projecting; preopercular spine long, reaching well past operculum; dorsal rays X, 12; anal rays 10; pectoral fins with concave rear edges, 13-14 joined rays, fins reaching to middle of base of anal fin, with 3 enlarged, free rays at bottom of fin; body scaled; membrane above opercular spine with scales; nape with scales.

Head and body light grey-brown; pectoral uniform black or with black and white bars on upper part; dorsal fin with an ocellated oval spot between spines IV-V.

Size: reaches 18 cm.

Habitat: mud-sand bottoms.

Depth: 9-274 m, usually 27-146 m.

The Gulf of Mexico.
