Striped searobin

Head large, deep, robust; no cirri at nostrils or over eyes; no spine at nostril; mouth large, reaches to under front edge of eye, opens slightly under snout, lower jaw not projecting; preopercular spine reaching past operculum; 17-24 gill rakers; dorsal rays X, 12; anal rays 10; pectoral fin with rounded rear edge, 13-14 joined rays, lower rays not longer than upper, reaches almost to end of anal fin base, with 3 enlarged, free rays at bottom of fin; body scaled; chest and throat & between pelvics with scales; membrane above opercular spine with scales; nape with scales.

Reddish to olive brown; a narrow dark stripe along lateral line, another along lower body; close-set dark wavy vertical lines across entire pectoral fin, inner part of fin blackish; spiny dorsal with a dark blotch between spines IV-V.

Reaches 45 cm.

Habitat: mud-sand bottoms.

Depth: 9-180 m, usually 18-64 m.

Nova Scotia to  Florida.
