Head very bony, with numerous spines, without pit behind eye; snout long (130-200% of eye) and pointed; ridge under eye with 3-4 spines; uppermost preopercular spine longest, 2nd spine reduced or absent; teeth on roof of mouth at sides but not at front; slit present behind last gill arch; dorsal fin XII (none elongated), 10.5 (9.5-11.5); anal III+5; pectoral with longest rays in center, 17 (15-18) rays, all unbranched; scales rough, present on cheek. behind eye and on chest; lateral line complete, with tubes on scales;.
Reddish; scattered dark specks on head and body; fins spotted with red.
Reaches 46 cm.
Rocky and shell bottoms.
Depth range: 32-549 m.
Bermuda to Venezuela.
