Yucatan pipe fish

Snout moderate length and depth; narrow bar of bone in front of eye; no ridge above operculum, or along side of snout; ridges along top of snout and  head low; opercular ridge, only on front 1/2 of opercle in adults; body and front part of tail slender; dorsal fin 22-27, fin origin on trunk, well before anus; anal fin 2-4; pectoral fin 10-13, fin short; no pelvic fins; tail fin 10; ridge along side of body ends under dorsal fin, not joining that along side of tail; upper ridge of body discontinuous with that of tail just behind dorsal fin; ridges along bottom of body and tail joined; trunk rings 14-15; tail rings 30-32; no skin flaps; brood pouch under tail, its plates folded inwards.

Tan, mottled or barred with dark brown; side and top of head plain or mottled, lower part of head pale; snout blotched or barred on lower side; upper or all body usually with 12-13 narrow (0.5-1 ring wide) pale or dark bars, separated by wider (2-4 ring) interspaces; body of females usually with dark-edged pale bars on lower half; fins pale.

Reaches 7 cm.

Seagrass and algal beds.

Depth: 0-2 m.

The northern and Caribbean coast of the Yucatan peninsula.
