Uncommon Pipefish

Snout short, ~ eye length; ridge all along center of snout with a conical spine at center of snout, joining at rear with a pair of ridges on top of head; side of snout without spines; a low ridge along entire operculum angles slightly up and back; dorsal fin 21; anal fin 3; pectoral fin 10; no pelvic fins; tail fin 8; trunk rings 17-21, total rings 52-62; upper body and tail ridges interrupted near rear of dorsal fin; lower trunk ridge ends near anus; side trunk ridge joins lower tail ridge just behind anus; main trunk ridges indented to notched between rings, edges minutely toothed; trunk rings 18-19, tail rings 34-37, total rings 52-62; brood pouch under the tail, plates close with 1 overlapping the other; body cross-section V shaped below a little concave above; head and body without skin flaps.

Preserved fish tan; several narrow brown bars across nape; body with 10-11 brownish bars each 2-3 rings wide, separated by 2 ring pale interspaces; fins clear.

Reaches 3 cm.

The 2 collected specimens are pelagic juveniles collected in 100 m or more of water, although adults of other members of the genus are benthic.

Depth: 100-175 m.

Panama and Argentina.
