Head angled down; snout short, with a central ridge originating near its middle; rear 1/3 of tail curled under body, with tail fin; base of dorsal fin elevated, fin 15-18 rays; anal fin 2; no pelvic fins; lower trunk ridge ends near anus, upper trunk and tail ridges interrupted near rear of dorsal fin; lateral trunk ridge ends under dorsal fin; trunk 13-15 rings; head and body with branched skin flaps; brood pouch under tail rings 10-11, pouch plates not enlarged, pouch unsealed.
Color variable; dark blotches on a light background to uniform dark grey-brown.
Reaches 8.1 cm.
Pelagic in floating Sargassum; occasionally in benthic algae and on reefs.
Depth range: 1-15 m.
New Brunswick to NE Brazil.
