Deepbody Boarfish

Body very deep (depth 80-100% SL), rhomboidal, strongly compressed; upper and lower body profiles convex; head small, with radiating bony ridges; forehead profile strongly concave; a distinct crest along nape; eyes large, but relatively small; mouth small, oblique, opens at front, top jaw protrusible; 19-22 gill rakers; dorsal fin continuous, VIII (rarely VII or IX) spines, 3rd longest, 31-37; anal fin II-III spines, 1st longest, 29-34, spines separate from rays; soft dorsal and anal fins with long bases, scaly sheaths; pectoral fins bluntly pointed, with I spine, 13 (rarely 12 or 14) rays pelvic fins I, 5, spine reaching well past anal fin origin; tail fin bluntly rounded; scales with a toothed keel at rear + small teeth, 47-54 along side; lateral line arched.

Pink to orange-red; 3 dark red bars - eye, midbody, tail base; vertical fins whitish.

Reaches 30.5 cm.

On and near the bottom.

Depth range: 27-900 m, usually 100-300 m.

Worldwide (except the E Pacific) in tropical and subtropical areas; Massachusetts to Argentina.
