Blackbar Soldierfish

Body ovate, deep; mouth moderately large, oblique; snout blunt, forehead convex; eye very large; no spine at corner of preopercle, which has a concave edge; opercle with one short spine, inner ridge of opercle and other head bones serrated; dorsal fin with X + I, 12-15, continuous but deeply notched between last 2 spines; anal with IV spines, 3rd spine stoutest, it or 4th longest, 12-13 rays; pelvics I, 7; tail forked; scales large, very rough; lateral line scales 33-37.

Red; a black bar that extends down the membrane at edge of gill cover to the upper pectoral axil; a black bar through the eye; all fins except the pectorals with white tips.

Size: attains 25 cm.

Habitat: reef habitats.

Depth: 1-210 m.

East, west and south Atlantic; North Carolina to Brazil.
