Body ovate, deep; snout moderately pointed with relatively long straight forehead; eyes large, at upper margin of head; groove on top of snout oblong; mouth moderately large, slightly oblique; edge of bone under eye with large, strong, backward pointing spines; 2 large spines at lower corner of preoperculum and 2 spines at top corner of operculum; dorsal with XII spines, last spine equal to or longer than spine before it, fin not divided to base between 11th and 12th spines; anal with IV spines, none extremely long or thick, 9-12; pelvics I, 7; tail small, forked, with strongly rounded lobes; scales very rough, 28-30 on lateral line.
Uniform orange-red.
Reaches 23 cm.
Presumably on hard bottoms.
Depth range: 42-275 m.
North Carolina to Brazil, St Helena in the central Atlantic, the E Atlantic.
