Splendid Alfonsino, Slender Alfonsino
Body oval, compressed, greatest depth 33-40% of SL; head large; eye very large, (13.9-14.4% of SL), much wider than snout length; top of head with large sensory canals covered by thin skin, separated by thin ridges; 1 conspicuous sideways projecting spine on bone just under nostrils and in front of eye; mouth large, oblique, not reaching under rear edge of eye, top jaw expanded at rear; teeth small, simple; preopercle edge without spines; 1 dorsal fin, III-V (front low), 13-15; anal fin III-IV, 25-30, its origin under end of or behind dorsal fin base; pelvic I, 11-13; tail fin deeply forked; scales spiny; cheeks and opercle covered by scales; lateral line 69-82 pored scales, the last few on the tail fin.
Head, back and fins bright red; lower sides and belly silvery-pink to yellowish-pink; peritoneum black.
Reaches 70 cm.
Bottom and near bottom on the continental shelf and slope; migrate into shallow water at night.
Depth range: 25-1300 m.
Worldwide in tropical and temperate areas, except the northeastern Pacific and Mediterranean; Maine to Brazil.
