Cuban Gulf Killifish

Body slender, compressed; head flattened above, with straight to slightly concave upper profile; cover of eye not continuous with head skin; front nostril not tubular; mouth small, oblique, opens at front, protrusible, top jaw twisted, lower jaw projecting; 10 pores under chin; jaws with outer row of pointed conical teeth, inner band of simple teeth; gill rakers 8 (7-9); no spines in fins; dorsal fin short based, its origin over or before anal fin origin, 10-15 rays; anal fin with 3rd fin ray branched, 9-10 rays; pectoral with narrow base, rounded, inserted low on side, 17 (16-18) rays; pelvics inserted well behind pectoral base; tail base depth 71-91% of its length; tail fin bluntly rounded; small smooth scales, midlateral rows 32-33; lateral line reduced to a series of pits along side of body.

Both sexes brownish above, paler below; body with many small pale spots, narrow pale bars on flanks. Male with dorsal, anal and tail fins dark, with small pale spots, yellow outer margins.

Reaches 8 cm.

Fresh to brackish water.

Depth range: 0-1 m.

Cuba.

Sometimes regarded as a subspecies of Fundulus grandis.
