Body elongate, compressed at rear; head flattened above, with straight to slightly convex upper profile; snout rounded, </= eye, head behind eye 1-2 times eye diameter; cover of eye not continuous with head skin; front nostril not tubular; mouth small, oblique, opens at front, protrusible, top jaw twisted, lower jaw projecting; chin area with 9-10 pores; jaws with multiseried teeth; gill rakers short, 7-13; no spines in fins; dorsal fin short based, its origin slightly before anal fin origin, 10-14 rays; female with a pouch before the anal fin that is >10% the length of that fin’s base; anal fin with 3rd fin ray branched, 10-11 rays; dorsal and anal fins longer in male; pectoral with narrow base, rounded, inserted low on side, 18-19 (15-21) rays; pelvics inserted well behind pectoral base; least depth of tail base >13% SL; tail fin rounded; small smooth scales, 33-34 (31-38) midlateral rows; scales before dorsal fin 13-19; lateral line reduced to a series of pits along side of body.
Male body with 10-11 wide dark bars that are usually wider than pale interspaces; body and fins with small pale spots, fins with yellow outer margins. Female: uniform brown body and fins, with faint dark bars on body.
Reaches 18 cm.
Vegetated freshwater and brackish water habitats.
Depth range: 0-1 m.
Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico.
