Elegant Silverside

Elongate; front L-shaped sensory pits on top of snout fused at rear; top jaw extendible, premaxilla with rear end greatly expanded, without expanded bony process above its center, rear edge of mouth curved downwards, not reaching front edge of eye; rear of roof of mouth without teeth; 20-29 (rarely 19) lower gill rakers; 1st dorsal fin IV; 3-6 (rarely 7) anal soft rays before origin of first dorsal, 12-16 before origin of second dorsal; pectoral fins short, reaching to about middle of pelvic fins, inserted high on body, above mid-level of eye; mid-side scales about 40-45; 21-25 scales around body; 7-9 transverse scale rows; only a few scales on front of base of anal fin; a large scale at base of pelvic fins.

Yellow to greenish above, sometimes completely dusky; fins clear to dusky; flank stripe prominent and dark, not silver.

Size: reaches 12.5 cm.

Habitat: fresh and brackish water of coastal rivers, estuaries, lakes and mangroves.

Depth: 0-10 m?

Northern Belize to Guatemala.
