Elongate; sensory system on snout not in 4 large quadrangular pits; top jaw extendible, premaxilla with rear end greatly expanded, without expanded bony process above its center, rear edge of mouth extends to under front of eye; 12-18 lower gill rakers; 1st dorsal fin IV, its origin over origin of anal fin; anal rays I, 27; pectoral fins reaching to about end of pelvic fins, inserted high on body, above mid-level of eye; 7-9 transverse scales rows; 20-25 scales around circumference of body; mid-side scales about 35-44, rarely 45; sheath of scales on front half of base of anal fin only; a large scale at base of pelvic fins.

Bright yellow above, paler below; midlateral stripe more black than silver; dorsal and tail fins dusky to dark.

Size: reaches 9.7 cm.

Habitat: primarily freshwater, but also in brackish water of coastal estuaries.

Depth: 0-10 m?

The SW Gulf of Mexico.
