Miller's Silverside

Elongate; sensory system on top of snout not as 4 large quadrangular pits; top jaw extendible, premaxilla with rear end greatly expanded, without expanded bony process above its center, rear edge of jaw curves down, does not reach under front edge of eye; 20-29 (rarely 19) lower gill rakers; first dorsal fin IV; 6-8 (rarely 5) soft anal rays before origin of first dorsal fin, 16-18 before origin of second dorsal fin; pectoral fins long, reaching past end of pelvic fins, inserted high on body, above mid-level of eye; mid-side scales about 40-45; 21-25 scales around body; 7-9 transverse scale rows; anal fin without scales along front half of its base; a large scale at base of pelvic fins.

Pale with narrow dark scale outines; 2-3 rows of distinctive large pigment spots between upper 1/3 of operculum and pectoral fin base; anal fin base distinctly pigmented; tail fin with dusky to black margin; with lateral silver stripe.

Size: reaches 14 cm.

Habitat: brackish estuaries and lagoons.

Depth: 0-10 m.
