Elongate; sensory pits at front of snout L shaped, those not fused at rear; top jaw extendible, premaxilla with rear end greatly expanded, without expanded bony process above its center, rear edge of mouth curves down, does not reach level of front of eye; teeth on rear of roof of mouth; 20-29 (rarely 19) lower gill rakers; dorsal fin IV, its origin over origin over 3rd-6th (rarely 7th) anal fin soft ray; origin of 2nd dorsal fin over anal rays 13-17; pectoral fins reaching to about middle of pelvic fins, inserted high on body, above mid-level of eye; mid-side scales about 40-45; 7-9 transverse scale rows; 21-25 scales around body circumference; sheath of scales along front 1/3 of base of anal fin; a large scale at base of pelvic fins.

Upper body greenish, lower body pale; silver midlateral band prominent, with bluish reflections, bordered above with black.

Size: reaches 11.5 cm.

Habitat: Primarily freshwater but also in coastal estuaries
