Robust Silverside

Elongate; sensory pits on top of snout not as 4 large quadrangular pits; top jaw extendible, premaxilla with rear end greatly expanded, without expanded bony process above its center; 13-16 lower gill rakers; 1st dorsal fin IV, origin behind 2nd-5th ray of anal fin; anal rays I, 18-20; pectoral 14-15, long, reaching to about end of pelvic fins, inserted high on body, above mid-level of eye; lateral scales 35-44; transverse scale rows 6; 17-20 scales around body; scale sheath on base of anal fin absent or on first few rays only; a large scale at base of pelvic fins.

Pale yellow above and below, with narrow dark scale outines; silver midlateral band, with dark top edging.

Size: reaches 16 cm.

Habitat: coastal beaches, estuaries and mangroves.

Depth: 0-10 m?

Colombia to Brazil.
