Elongate; sensory pits on snout not as 4 large quadrangular pits; top jaw extendible, premaxilla with rear end greatly expanded, without expanded bony process above its center; 18-22 lower gill rakers; dorsal rays IV, origin behind origin of anal fin, + I,12 or fewer soft rays; anal rays I, 19-23; pectoral fins long, reaching to about end of pelvic fins, inserted high on body, above mid-level of eye; mid-side scales about 48-49; transverse body scales 6; 17-20 scales around circumference of body; sheath of scales along front half of anal fin base; a large scale at base of pelvic fins.
Greenish above, pale below; midlateral band more black than silver.
Size: reaches 10 cm.
Habitat: in shallow bays.
