Head and front of body flattened, broad, body narrowing behind; eyes in top of head; ridge from top of eye to snout smooth; bone behind eye with 1 spine; mouth broad, with many long, sharp teeth; gill opening large, behind and extending in front of pectoral base; dorsal fin consists of III isolated spines on head, first spine acts as a fishing pole with complex "lure" (bearing pennant-like flap, long cirri, and, usually, dark, stalked, eye-like appendages), 3rd spine 22.7-44.7% SL, then a group of III spines (last may be very small, very close to spine before it) joined by membrane above pectoral fin and a soft fin (8 rays) behind, on rear of body; anal fin 6; pectoral fin 14-16, pectoral fins limb-like; gill opening in "armpit" of pectoral fins, extends in front of fin base; head and body with scattered branched skin flaps.
Top of head and body covered with a fine mesh or chain pattern; floor of mouth with 2 dark blotches; lining of stomach cavity pale.
Size: reaches about 30 cm.
Habitat: sandy and muddy bottoms.
Depth range: 65-820 m.
North Carolina to the southern Caribbean.
