Reticulate Toadfish
Relatively long bodied; head depressed, with many branched barbells and skin flaps, especially along lower jaw; no cirri between eyes; all barbells on chin are branched, more deeply divided than in other species with branched barbells; front nostrils are tubular; gill openings restricted to side, before pectoral fin base; operculum with 2 solid spines at top corner and one at bottom corner; a large pore leading to a group of glands just behind base of pectoral fin, no glands on pectoral fin itself; dorsal fin III, 31-32; 25-26 anal fin rays; 2 lateral lines, 34-36 papillae on upper lateral line, 30-32 on lower line; no light organs; no scales.
Head, body and fins dark, covered with a network of pale lines; tail fin with ~6 narrow wavy pale bars.
Reaches 42 cm.
Lives in caves under corals.
Depth range: 0-10 m.
Known only from the N Yucatan coast.
