Porichthys bathoiketes Gilbert, 1968

Deep toadfish

Body compressed, elongate; head a little flattened above, no tentacles; 1 strong solid spine on opercle, no subopercular spines; teeth like canines; 12-13 (11-14) gill rakers; gill openings restricted to side, before pectoral fin base;  dorsal rays II (solid) + 35 (33-36); anal rays 32 (31-33); pectoral fin 17 (15-18); discrete glands on inner surface of pectoral between upper fin rays, no pore behind pectoral fin base; four lateral lines with conspicuous rows of light organs; row of light organs behind that on chin has a U shape, with a central, forward-pointing extension; no scales.

Body entirely dark; a black patch on back around base of 1st dorsal fin;  upper flank with 6-8 irregular dark blotches from behind head to base of tail fin, the last 3-4 joined across top of back; dorsal fin with outer half dark;  anal fin with dark outer outer half; pectoral fins with dark base and lower ¼ of fin; tail fin with dark rear edge.

Size: grows to 16 cm.

Inhabits sand and mud bottoms.

Depth 132 - 320 m.

Honduras to the Guyanas.
