Cotuero toadfish
Head depressed, long (40-44% of SL), mostly covered with fine filaments, many tentacles around lower jaws; no tentacles over eyes; eye large; 2 solid spines on upper opercle and 2 below and behind those; large molar teeth on both jaws, no canines; gill openings restricted to side, before pectoral fin base; dorsal rays III (solid spines), 21-23; anal rays 19-21; pectoral 18-21 rays; 6-11 discrete glands on inner surface of pectoral fin between bases of upper rays; glandular tissue but no pore just behind pectoral base; 2 lateral lines, (31-40 pores on upper, 29-37 (usually < 34) on lower); no light organs; body covered with small imbedded scales; scales on rear of nape only.
Back and sides brown with a yellow to green tint; body with several irregular dark bars; fins with alternating dark and light oblique bars; belly whitish.
Size: 30 cm.
Habitat: muddy bottoms, especially in mangrove lagoons.
Depth: 1-10 m?
Colombia and Venezuela.
