Large-eye toadfish
Head depressed, narrow; eyes relatively large, no tentacles over eyes; filaments between and behind eyes; 2 spines on upper opercle; 2 spines below and behind opercular spines; teeth pointed; gill openings restricted to side, before pectoral fin base; dorsal rays III, 24-26; anal 22-23 rays; discrete glands on inner surface of pectoral fin between bases of upper rays, glandular tissue but no pore just behind pectoral base; 2 lateral lines, (upper 36-45 pores, lower 33-41 (usually 34 or more); no light organs; body covered with small imbedded scales; scales on top end at rear of nape only.
Large fish nearly uniform brown above; juveniles with dark bars; pectoral and tail fins with distinct dark and white bars, dorsal and anal fins with oblique stripes of same color; 2 lateral lines white; many of mouth barbels white.
Size: 27 cm.
Habitat: soft bottoms, marine, estuarine and into freshwater.
Depth: 3-30 m.
