Snout fleshy; head wide (12% SL); many small filaments on head; skin thick, loose on head; eye small, under skin; front nostril immediately above the top lip; top jaw bone vertically expanded at rear, upper part not in a sheath, no hook at lower rear angle; teeth on sides of roof of mouth; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; gill opening not extending above level of top pectoral ray; 3 spiny proturberances and spiny plates on first gill arch; no spines at lower corner of preoperculum; a strong spine at upper corner of operculum; 8 branchiostegal rays; gill opening ends at of below top of pectoral base; dorsal fin 74; anal fin 37, its origin behind mid-body; pectoral fin without an elongated stalk-like base, 18 rays; pelvic fin is a single thread that originates under base of pectoral fin; anal fin originates on rear half of body; dorsal and anal fins broadly joined to tail fin; 1 lateral line, bends down to midside slightly after mid-body; scales absent; male with a stalked sex organ.
Light brown, darker above; inside each nasal chamber black, a white area between that and eye; lateral line in an unpigmented line, with 12 dark papillae before anus, clear papillae behind that; filaments on head dark; edges of dorsal and anal fins narrowly pale.
Lives on reefs.
Reaches 7.2 cm
Depth range: 6-8 m.
