Head large, deep; narrow (<7% of SL) between small eyes; front nostril is immediately above the top lip; head pores small; body elongate, compressed, decreasing to slender tail base; preopercle with 3 pores at lower rear corner; opercle with 1 flat spine with 2 points at upper angle; 2-4 long gill rakers; top jaw bone expanded vertically at rear, with a knob at lower rear corner; jaw teeth pointed, in bands; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; dorsal fin 94; anal fin 70; each pelvic fin consists of 1 short filament, inserted under edge of gill cover; dorsal and anal fins separate from tail; lateral line indistinct, continuous, complete; scales small, imbedded, covering body, none on operculum, a narrow patch of scales on cheek.
Preserved fish metallic dark blue.
Reaches 7 cm.
Coral reefs.
Depth: ~5 m.
Known from a single specimen collected at Toro reef, near the entrance to the Panama Canal (see Moller et al, 2005).
