Smalleye Brotula

Body robust; head relatively long and low; eyes small, distinct; front nostril high on snout, midway between top lip and rear nostril; rear end of top jaw expanded vertically; lower front gill arch with 1 short plate-like raker between 2 longer rakers, upper branch with 3 slightly elongate rakers; tip of sharp opercular spine exposed; preoperculum with 3 pores at lower rear corner, 1 above; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; dorsal fin 71-79; anal fin 55-61; pectoral fin 21-23; tail fin not joined to dorsal and anal fins; body covered with small overlapping scales; head scales only on cheeks, but not above or below the opercular spine; male sex organ with 2 pairs of pseudoclaspers, outer pair flaplike, inner pair small, inner clasper with a front thorn shorter than the posterior lobe of that clasper.

Preserved fish uniform dark brown.

Reaches 8.2 cm.

Lives on reefs.

Depth range: 0-9 m.
