Elongate, slender, a little compressed; large eyes; mouth small, at front; top jaw toothless, lower jaw without teeth in adults; main bones of top jaw meet in front of a narrow bone on top front of snout; teeth in separate bands on center and sides of roof of mouth; tongue with 2-6 teeth along front edge; gill rakers long and thin, 21-23 lower rakers; fins without spines; 1 dorsal fin plus a small adipose fin at rear, over anal; pectorals low on sides, 12-14; pelvics on mid-belly; anal fin at rear; tail strongly forked; distance from anus to anal fin origin equal to or greater than depth of tail base; scales smooth, easily detached, 43-46 on lateral line.
Pale grey; a silvery stripe from top corner of operculum to tail base; back with a series of dark saddles.
Reaches 12.8 cm.
Lives over muddy and sand bottoms.
Depth range: 92-460 m.
S Carolina to Brazil.
