Relatively slender (depth = 21-23% of SL); snout prominent, conical, projecting, short and blunt; rear of the mouth extends well behind the eye; lower jaw suspended below head; upper jaw moderately long, reaching well beyond rear margin of eye, but not reaching rear margin of opercle, its rear tip rounded; both jaws with large, well spaced teeth, those on lower jaw larger; lower jaw with small canine-like teeth; gill rakers: 20-23 lower, 37-42 total; anal fin with long base, 24-27 rays, origin under midpoint of dorsal fin; insertion of pelvic fin nearer pectoral fin base than anal fin origin.
Blue on back, silvery white below; several small black dots on upper gill cover; a silver midlateral stripe present on smaller fish.
Size: to 19 cm.
A primarily freshwater species that enters brackish water.

Colombia to the Gulf of Venezuela.
