Atlantic Sabretooth-anchovy
Fusiform, elongate, body depth 23-24.5% of SL; snout prominent, conical, projecting, bluntly rounded, short (~2/3 eye); eye far forward; rear of the mouth extends well behind the eye; lower jaw suspended below head; upper jaw long, reaching edge of operculum, its tip sharply pointed; both jaws with large, well spaced teeth, those on lower jaw larger; lower jaw with large, widely spaced canine teeth; lower gill rakers 16-26 (total rakers 30-36); anal fin with long base, iii, 26-28 branched rays, its origin under midpoint of dorsal fin base; pelvics usually inserted nearer anal fin origin than pectoral fin base.
Blue-grey on back, silvery on side; a short arc of black dots on upper gill cover; fins clear.
Size: to 26 cm.
Shallow coastal waters over muddy bottoms; estuaries, lagoons, enters freshwater.
Depth: 0-40 m?
