Bate's sabretooth-anchovy

Body elongate and compressed; snout ~3/4 eye diameter; snout prominent, conical, projecting;  rear of the mouth extends well behind the eye; lower jaw suspended below head; upper jaw moderately long, reaching almost to or just behind front edge of preopercle, its rear tip pointed; both jaws with large, well spaced teeth, those on lower jaw larger; lower jaw with small teeth at front, then larger canines behind, especially around middle of jaw; lower gill rakers 12-15, short and stumpy, first 1-3 rudimentary in large fish; dorsal fin well behind mid-body; anal fin with long base 26-30 branched rays, origin under first 1-4 branched dorsal fin rays; insertion of pelvic fin nearer pectoral fin base than anal fin origin.

A broad silver stripe along mid-side of small fin, 2X eye diameter at its widest point, disappearing in fish larger than ~12 cm; a curve of black dots on upper operculum.  

Size: to 30 cm.

Occurs in low salinity estuaries and freshwater.  

Depth: 0-10 m?

The Orinoco to Brazil.
