Silver Anchovy

Body fusiform, rounded; snout prominent, conical, projecting, sharply pointed; rear of the mouth extends well behind the eye; lower jaw suspended below head; top jaw relatively short, reaching only to front of preopercle, tip blunt; gill filament cluster attached under gill cover is >eye diameter, extends onto rear of operculum; no large canine teeth; membrane between gill covers not expanded at rear, so exposing a vertical bony plate on throat between gill covers; 27-43 lower gill rakers; anal fin base short, 13-15 branched rays, origin well behind base of last dorsal ray.

Blue-green above, silvery on side, sometimes a broad silver stripe (with a dark edge above) along flank.

Size: to 12 cm.

Habitat: marine, coastal pelagic, especially in sheltered areas.

Depth: 0-65 m.

Massachusetts to Brazil.
