Atlantic Anchoveta
Deep, compressed body; snout conical, projecting, sharply pointed and prominent; rear of the mouth extends well behind the eye; lower jaw suspended below head; upper jaw not reaching angle of mouth, its rear tip bluntly rounded; gill membranes widely joined across isthmus (throat region), almost completely covering it; lower gill rakers fine and numerous (45 or more), none on inner face of top limb of 3rd gill arch; anal fin with long base, 18-24 branched rays, origin under rear 1/3 of base of dorsal fin; pectoral short, not reaching to pelvics.
Dark blue-green above, silvery below; a silver midlateral stripe in smaller fish; fins clear.
Size: reaches about 17 cm.
Habitat: coastal waters and lagoons and brackish estuaries.
Depth: 0-25 m.
The Gulf of Mexico to Brazil.
