Zabaleta anchova
Fusiform, compressed; snout prominent, conical, projecting; rear of the mouth extends well behind the eye; lower jaw suspended below head; top jaw bone with broad, obliquely angular tip, reaching onto preoperculum; 100 or more fine slender lower gill rakers, none on upper part of 3rd arch; gill membrane not joined across under throat; dorsal fin origin at about midbody; anal fin base long, 28-35 rays, origin under dorsal fin origin.
Top of body blue-green; side silvery, silver stripe along side only in small fish (up to 5 cm); dorsal and tail fins yellow, with dark outer margins.
Reaches 30 cm.
Lives in coastal waters, estuaries and mangrove lagoons, over muddy bottoms; tolerates a wide range of salinities -freshwater to hypersaline lagoons.
