Lile piquitinga (Schreiner & Miranda Ribeiro, 1903)

Atlantic piquitinga

Fusiform, slightly compressed; mouth opens slightly up, oblique, short, top jaws without a central notch; with only 2 toothed bones; well developed bone above front of top jaw bone; no back-pointing spine on top front corner of main top-jaw bone; rear border of gill opening on body evenly rounded, without 2 fleshy lobes on shoulder below opening; operculum without bony crests; pelvic fins on the abdomen, insert under center of dorsal fin base, i, 7; anal fin short base, 13-20, fin well behind dorsal fin; pectoral small, sickle shaped; a forked tail fin; belly with strong keel of scutes (hard bony scales).

Body blue-green above, sides lighter; a strong silver stripe (~3/4 eye diameter wide) along the flank; a dark spot on top of tail base just before tail fin; fins clear.  

Size: 15 cm.

Habitat: protected coastal waters over mud bottoms; estuaries, mangrove lagoons, hypersaline lagoons; enters freshwater.

Depth: 0-50 m.

Costa Rica to Brazil.
