Small, elongate, with rounded body; eye large, 40% of head length; premaxilla (at front of top jaw) elongate, triangular, with teeth; isthmus of throat broadly triangular and pointed; lower gill rakers 20-24 (usually 22-23); only 6-7 rays on the membrane under the gill cover; anal fin short based; pectoral fin 11-12 rays; a forked tail fin; a W shaped hard bony scale at the base of the pelvic fins, no other scutes (hard bony scales) along lower midline of body.
Adults with a silver stripe that does NOT narrow and fade at front.
Reaches 7.5 cm.
In shallow water inshore.
Depth range: 0-5 m.
SE Florida, the Bahamas and Caribbean.
