Shortstriped Round Herring
Small, elongate, with rounded body; premaxilla (at front of top jaw) elongate, triangular, with teeth; isthmus of throat broadly triangular and pointed, without shoulders at front; lower gill rakers 20-24 (usually 21-22); only 6-7 rays on the membrane under the gill cover; anal fin short based; pectoral fin 10-13 rays; pelvic fin 8, on the abdomen below the dorsal fin, insert slightly closer to tail fin base than to tip of snout; a forked tail fin; a W shaped hard bony scale at the base of the pelvic fins, no other scutes (hard bony scales) along lower midline of body.
Silver stripe narrowing and fading from under rear of dorsal fin forwards.
Reaches 7.1 cm.
In shallow water inshore.
Depth range: 0-5 m.
