Dwarf Herring, Dwarf Round Herring

Small, elongate, rounded, slightly compressed body; body depth usually >15% SL; eye 7.7-11.5% SL; premaxilla (at front of top jaw) elongate, triangular, with teeth; isthmus of throat slender, but with slight shoulders at front; lower gill rakers 20-30; 6-7 rays on the membrane under the gill cover; anal fin short based, 15-16; pectoral fin 13-14 rays; pelvic fins 8, on the abdomen below the dorsal fin, insert slightly closer to tail fin base than to tip of snout; a forked tail fin; a W shaped hard bony scale at the base of the pelvic fins, no other scutes (hard bony scales) along lower midline of body.

Adults with a broad silver stripe that does not narrow at front.

Reaches 8.3 cm

In shallow water off beaches and rocky areas.

Depth range: 0-5 m.
