Dogtooth herring
Elongate, moderately compressed; eye large; mouth short, opens at front, lower jaw not strongly projecting; top jaws with only two toothed bones; jaw teeth strong and conical, large canines at front of both jaws; a single dorsal fin; pectoral fins low on the side just behind the head; no fin spines; small pelvics present, 6 rays, before dorsal fin; anal fin with long base, 38-44, origin before dorsal fin; a forked tail fin; with a sharp keel of 25-28 (25-30) scutes along belly.
Creamy yellow to light brown, with a silver stripe along side.
Reaches 13 cm.
Coastal marine areas, usually over muddy bottoms, in river mouths and lagoons.
Depth range: 0-40 m.
Cuba to Brazil.
