Slender worm eel

Worm-like; moderately elongate (body depth 1.5-2.2% of TL), compressed; head and trunk 35-39% of TL; head 6.9-7.8% of TL; eye over rear 1/3 of mouth; snout blunt, swollen, rough, overhanging, without groove on underside; front nostril tubular, flared at edge, with a short side barbel, rear one an irregular elongate slit before lower edge of eye; lips without barbels, teeth small, conical, sharp, 2-3 pairs of teeth at front top, those continuous with a 2-3 row patch followed by a single row on front of roof of mouth; 1 row of teeth on jaws, slender, directed back, 9-18 teeth on top jaw, 23 on lower; gill opening small, on underside; dorsal fin origin about mid-trunk; pectoral fin tiny (< eye), at top of gill opening; dorsal and anal fins confluent with tail fin; tail flexible, tail fin not obvious; lateral line complete, lines of each side of head connected by 2 canals with across top of head.

Preserved fish uniform brown, with small speckles and spots.

Reaches 30.8 cm.

Lives on soft bottoms.

Depth range: 100-494 m.

Bahamas to Brazil.
