Blotchside snake eel

Body cylindrical, slender (height 2.4-3% TL); tail 58-62% of TL; snout conical; eye moderate, over rear 1/2 of mouth; front nostril a tube, rear nostril at edge of lip, entirely outside mouth, covered at front by a small flap; mouth large; teeth small, conical, similar size, roof of mouth with  1-3 pairs before one row of 9-14, between top jaws with chevron patch of 5-7 teeth, top jaw with 2 rows, 11-23 in outer row, 3-14 in inner row, lower jaw with 1 row of 19-25 close-set teeth; dorsal origin well behind pectorals, by a head length; pectoral fin 14-22% of head length, rounded; tip of tail a blunt, finless point; lateral line complete, lines of each side of head connected by 2 canals with across top of head.

Pale grey; body with one row of 20-25 dark blotches that are =/> eye size along mid-side; fins colorless.

Reaches 28 cm.

On sand and rubble bottoms.

Depth range: 169-1400 m.

The Gulf of Mexico to Brazil.
