Faintsaddled snake eel
Body cylindrical, stouter than tail; tail 53-57% of TL; front of head conical, flat between eyes; snout overhanging; eye large and bulbous, its rear edge over corner of mouth; front nostril tubular, narrow; rear nostril at edge of and entirely outside mouth, with a small flap at front; mouth large; teeth conical, small, roof of mouth with 1 pair then 1 row of 12-18 teeth; jaws with 2 rows of teeth; top jaw with 2 rows of 24-36 and 18-26 teeth, lower jaw with 25-32 close set outer teeth, and an inner row of 4 at front then 4-10 well to rear; dorsal origin from just before to just after tip of pectoral; pectoral fin 25-31% of head length, pointed, with restricted base - opposite and above upper half of gill opening; tip of tail a blunt, finless point; lateral line complete, lines of each side of head connected by 2 canals with across top of head.
Preserved fish: yellow to tan; a tan triangle between and behind eyes; snout tip brown; 16 faint tan saddles on body, from just before gill opening back; dorsal fin edge dark.
Reaches 38.5 cm.
On soft bottoms.
Depth range: 88-293 m.
Gulf of Mexico to Colombia.
