Shrimp snake-eel

Body cylindrical, stouter than tail; tail 62-65% of TL; eye large, over rear 1/3  of mouth; snout broad, overhanging; front nostril tubular, with convoluted edge; rear nostril opening partly into mouth, with an outer flap; mouth large; teeth conical, small, no fangs, roof of mouth with 2-3 irregular rows of teeth; top jaw with 2 rows of 23-27 teeth in small fish, many more that are in 3-4 rows at rear in larger ones, lower jaw with teeth similar to those on top jaw; dorsal fin origin over rear 1/3 of pectoral; pectoral fin long (37-45% of head length), pointed to rounded, with restricted base - opposite and above upper half of gill opening; tip of tail a blunt, finless point; lateral line complete, lines of each side of head connected by 2 canals with across top of head.

Variable: dark grey to blackish above, yellow to blackish below, sometimes a sharp break between dark and light; head dark; head pores inconspicuous or in dark dots; dorsal and anal pale at base, edges black.

Reaches 91.4 cm.

Habitat: On soft bottoms.

Depth range: 1-457 m, usually < 90 m.

N Carolina to Brazil.
