Irksome eel

Body very elongate (depth 1.6% of TL), cylindrical; anus shortly behind mid-length; with a blunt tip; snout short, overhanging; underside of snout flat, with a central groove that extends nearly to front nostrils, and barely exposes a chevron of 4 protruding teeth; jaws short, lower jaw not reaching front nostril; teeth small, conical, in single series on jaws (9-11 on top jaws, 9 on bottom jaws); chevron of 4 front teeth followed by 11 teeth in 1 row on roof of mouth; front nostril in a short tube, extending noticeably below snout; rear nostril a minute vertical slit at level of eye opening into mouth; eye small; gill opening crescentic, low on side; dorsal fin origin on head; median fins low, extending nearly to finless tail tip; no pectorals; lateral line complete, pores difficult to see, lines of each side of head connected by 2 canals with across top of head.

Preserved fish brown, with minute freckles; fins colorless.

At least 34 cm.

Lives in soft bottoms.

Depth range: 10-300 m.

Gulf of Mexico to Venezuela.
